What Terrible Sacrifices Will Be Asked Of Him Next?
The title above should have been the headline on the USA Today story about Bush's vacation this year. The paper of record for ADD sufferers pulled out the violins over the fact that Bush is cutting his vacation to only 10 days. I know, it makes you tear up even before you've read the story, doesn't it?
But I know how to really get the waterworks flowing. Check out these excerpts from the story:
Bush usually spends three to four weeks at his 1,600-acre spread near Crawford, Texas. His rest, though, has been marred by wars, a re-election campaign, anti-war protests and Hurricane Katrina.
The true tragedy of Hurrican Katrina was that Dubya had to cut his vacation short by two whole days.
Black says people used to grant that presidents needed time off, but not anymore and not in times of crisis. “These are times when the president has to be seen as being the president, and to many Americans, if he's not in Washington, he's taking time off,” Black says.
How unfair! Of course, I sympathize because whenever I don't come into the office, my employers think I'm taking time off, too. The bastards!
The president's only restful summer stay at the ranch was his first one, the month before 9/11.
I know I'm thankful he had such a restful August that year.
“They don't understand the definition of work,” he responded to critics of his time away at an Aug. 8, 2001, news conference. “I'm getting a lot done. Secondly, you don't have to be in Washington to work. It's amazing what can happen with telephones and faxes.”
It's true, people who work for a living don't understand the definition of work. Only spoiled brats whose fathers have given them every little thing they ever wanted and who think "work" involving golf clubs is legitimate understand the definition.
Besides, just look at what can happen with telephones and faxes. Thanks to the miracle of modern technology, while Bush was in Crawford in August 2001 he received a memo prediciting Osama Bin Laden would attack the U.S. Now, he did nothing with that information, but just look at how much work the telephone and fax machine accomplished.
