Really now, what should we call this?
Check out this post by Amanda over at Pandagon about the Internet marriage brokering business.
Aside from the points Amanda made, I just had to wonder, is this really what we want from our society. That it enables businesses that prey on people's desperation. 21st Century indentured servitude? This is how far we've come?
Bad enough that the world sucks so much in so many places that women would marry complete strangers just to get out and get a shot at a decent life. Bad enough that men would view this as an acceptable, even ideal way to get a woman to marry them. But how gawdawful that companies are making profits and are permitted by our society to make profits off of bringing these people together.
I'm sure supporters of this practice (and no matter how icky it is, they exist) will say that it's all consensual. But desperate people lose, in direct relation to how desperate they are, the ability to consent. Therefore the very best prospects for recruitment by these companys would be women who can't say no.
U.S. capitalism at work. I'm so proud.

Back in the day, the loser roommate of my now-ex-boyfriend repeatedly pushed copies of "Cherry Blossoms" on said boyfriend - while we were still dating, no less! "Cherry Blossoms," for those unaware, was (is?) a catelog for mail-order Asian brides. Loser Roommate's ideal woman, as he stated on more than one occasion, was Chinese and as young as possible - so he could train her to be a "proper" wife.
Let me add that LR, unable, I guess, to afford an actual woman - even one willing to be sold into endless sexual indenture - ended up getting a dog instead, in the hope that the dog would attract chicks.
The dog ran away.
Now, why do I get the feeling that the guys mentioned in this article are also the type who couldn't keep a dog good company, let alone a woman?
